Released in July 2004, Indian
Summer is more than Carbon Leaf's strongest studio set since the critically
acclaimed Echo Echo; the latest release marks the bands most profound musical
and professional transformation to date.
The eleven songs were recorded
over the summer of 2003 at Sound of Music Studios in Richmond, VA. The band once
again turned to Producer John Morand, and this time out, brought on David Lowery
- of Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker - as Executive Producer.
After
finishing the Indian Summer sessions, Carbon Leaf came to a crossroads: This
album was too hot to release through the indie channels that had served the band
well. "We'd done five albums on our own and pushed that as far as it can go,"
singer/lyricist Barry Privett explains. "Obviously, anyone goes with a label in
hopes of getting a wider audience and a little more muscle. But because of who
we are and what we've achieved, our label had to be committed to artist
development -- a rarity these days." True to the Carbon Leaf spirit, the band
teamed up with Vanguard Records, a historically important, completely
independent and artist friendly recording label, to release Indian Summer.
